Backgroundįurther information: Battle of Kharkiv (2022), Battle of Izium (2022), First Battle of Lyman, and Russian occupation of Kharkiv Oblastĭuring the early days of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Russian forces captured much of eastern Kharkiv Oblast, including the towns of Kupiansk, Shevchenkove, and Balakliia. ĭuring the offensive, Ukraine had retaken over 500 settlements and 12,000 square kilometers of territory in the Kharkiv region. Following the launch of the Kherson counteroffensive in Southern Ukraine in late August, Ukrainian forces began a second counteroffensive in early September in Kharkiv Oblast, in Eastern Ukraine. The 2022 Kharkiv counteroffensive was a counteroffensive by the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the Russian-occupied Ukrainian territory of the Kharkiv Oblast which was launched on 6 September 2022.
